FIR lodged against unidentified Guj cops for custodial death
Ahmedabad: An FIR has been lodged against Local Crime Branch and Special Operations Group personnel in connection with the alleged custodial death of a man suspected of stealing gold, a senior official said on Sunday. Surubha Jhala (35), who was detained on October 14 in connection with a gold theft case registered a day earlier at Bagodara police station had died at a community health centre on October 15, Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police R V Asari said. Jhala had complained of uneasiness while he was in the custody of the LCB and was rushed to the health centre in the city’s Bopal area where he died, Asari said. “Jhala’s family members have alleged that he was tortured and murdered in custody. On the basis of a complaint by the deceased’s brother, Mahavirsinh, we filed an FIR Saturday night against unnamed LCB and SOG personnel,” Asari informed. The unidentified policemen have been charged under sections 302 (murder) and 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession) of the IPC, he said. The probe into the case is being carried out by Inspector I M Gohil of Bopal police station under the supervision of deputy SP K T Kamaria, he added. (PTI)
Nitish pays tribute to Bihar’s first chief minister
Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and a host of other leaders on Sunday paid floral tributes to the state’s first chief minister Krishna Singh on his birth anniversary. The official function was organised near the statue of Sri Krishna Singh in the main secretariat premises here. Kumar and a host of other leaders and dignitaries paid tributes by garlanding the former CM’s statue, an official release said. Prominent among those who paid tributes included Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, legislators Shyam Rajak, Arun Kumar Sinha, MLC Sanjay Singh and a host of other social and political workers. Artists of Information and Public Relations Department performed arti, bhajans and patriotic songs on the occasion. (PTI)
Private school teacher booked after student beaten by him dies
Banda (UP): A teacher of a private school in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district has been booked after an eight-year-old boy died allegedly after being beaten by him, police said on Sunday. Arbaj was allegedly beaten by his teacher Jairaj in Sadimadanput village on Tuesday, senior police officer L B Kumar Pal said. The student was admitted to a hospital where he died on Friday. The FIR was registered on Saturday based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family member. Police are probing the matter, the officer added. (PTI)

Man kills wife after altercation
Deoria (UP): A man allegedly stabbed his wife to death on Sunday after an altercation between them in Bhaluani village in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, police said. The incident took place in the morning when Izharul had an altercation with his wife Salma Khatoon (30), they said. As the accused attempted to flee the spot after the incident, the villagers caught him and handed him over to the police. A case was registered in this connection and the body has been sent for post-mortem, police said. (PTI)
2 held for gang-raping woman
Jaipur: Two men have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 23-year-old Nepali woman, police said on Sunday. Based on the survivor’s complaint, the accused Lokesh Saini (19) and Kamal Saini (24) were arrested late Saturday night, said ACP Jaipur South K K Awasthi. The accused had allegedly gang-raped the woman on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, SHO Muhana Police Station area Devendra Kumar said. According to the complaint, the accused had tortured her following which she jumped nude from the third floor of an apartment in Muhana area to escape. The survivor is currently undergoing treatment at Jaipuria Hospital. Medical examination has been done and the matter is being investigated, the SHO added. (PTI)
Doda post seized in Bikaner
Bikaner: A truck driver was arrested with nearly 3,900 kg of ‘doda post’ (a kind of opium), worth Rs 1 crore, under Sri Kolayat Police Station limits, police said on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, barricades were set up on Bikaner-Jaisalmer Highway, they said. The police signalled a truck driver to stop at the post but he sped away, prompting the police to chase him, Bikaner SP Swai Singh Godara said. He said the accused driver Ramgopal Bishnoi, a resident of Jodhpur, was arrested however a car escorting the truck managed to escape the scene. Narcotic substance worth Rs 1 crore was seized and the matter was being investigated, police said. The arrested was booked under NDPS Act. (PTI)
Banned plastic seized in Pune
Pune: A huge cache of banned plastic was seized from an industrial unit in Chakan in Pune district of Maharashtra on Saturday night, thanks to the alertness shown by state Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam. The minister spotted a tempo carrying some plastic material while he was on his way to Ahmednagar district, a Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) official said. “While the minister was on his way to Ahmednagar district, he spotted a tempo carrying some plastic material and upon enquiring with the driver it was revealed that thematerielbelongedto a packaging firm in Chakan,” said the official. The tempo driver led the minister and the officials accompanying him to the godown in the industrial town, located over 40 kms away from Pune. Officials from Revenue as well as MPCB were summoned at the spot at the behest of the minister, he said. “We have seized around 200 tonnes of raw material (used in the manufacture of packaging products such as bubble sheets, granules etc) and 26 tonnes of finished products at the unit. After conducting the panchnana, the seized materielhas been handed over to MPCB for further action,” said Suchitra Amale, tehsildar of Khed region. (PTI)
