SHILLONG: The move of the MDA government to appoint a senior police officer from Assam as the new DGP despite Meghalaya having the senior-most officer has raised eyebrows in the state.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said the government should refrain from appointing tainted officers as DGP and instead appoint the senior-most officer from Meghalaya, RP Agarwal.
Echoing similar views, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said though the KSU does not want to interfere in the appointment process, the group feels that the post of DGP should be given to a senior and capable officer from the state.
The UPSC had on October 1 cleared the names of RP Agarwal, who was temporarily made the Meghalaya DGP, and senior police officers from Assam R Chandranathan and AK Sinha Casshyap.
There were adverse media reports in Assam about certain irregularities and FIRs against Chandranathan Sinha was convicted for three months by the Supreme Court and sent to Tihar Jail for filing a false affidavit in the death of an under-trial prisoner when he was the SP of Silchar.
Congress leader Zenith Sangma said he is not biased but any person who is going to be appointed as DGP of the state must be scrutinised and examined properly so that his actions as the police chief are in conformity with the law of the land.
