SHILLONG: The state police headquarters has prevented a move to withdraw over Rs 90 lakh by former DGP R Awasthi a day before his retirement on September 29.
Sources said the money was withdrawn after several cheques of Rs 20 lakh each were signed by one AIG, who was appointed by Awasthi a few days before his retirement.
Sensing trouble, the money that was taken to the police headquarters, was re-deposited by the police authorities in the Laitumkhrah branch of a bank from where the cash was earlier withdrawn.
Awasthi was not available for comments. He also did not respond to a message seeking his response.
