SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will form town committees to implement building bylaws in scheduled areas.
Council chief HS Shylla told a section of reporters on Wednesday that the committees “will be able to operate in extended municipal areas as these are tribal areas but it all depends on people’s choice”.
The core municipal areas are Jail Road, Police Bazar and European Ward. Laitumkhrah, Jaiaw and Mawkhar are extended municipal areas where both the KHADC and the civic board can operate.
Shylla said areas outside the core civic region are under the jurisdiction of the district council.
“The municipality looks only after sanitation (in the tribal areas) but that is still illegal as it cannot operate in tribal areas,” he added.
