The Union which had in the past forwarded a letter to the District Administration of Ri Bhoi and the NHAI to stop using the name ‘Cherrapunjee’ as the Union terms it an old colonial name and that ‘Sohra’ is the correct name which should be officially known, published and displayed as per Government Notifications vide No.HPL539/81/32 dated 18th May 1982.

Union members while clarifying on this move said that they were prompted to do this as no action had been taken so far, either by the NHAI or District Administration despite after several requests.
