SHILLONG: With defects in the resolution on Khasi-Garo languages, the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) will meet Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to call a special session immediately to rectify the mistakes.
The KAS met Additional Chief Secretary PW Ingty on Monday and apprised him of the need to carry out the rectification at the earliest.
According to KAS, before the Centre takes up the resolution on Khasi-Garo languages, the state needs to rework on the resolution that was hurriedly passed.
Absence of medium of instruction in schools and colleges and Sahitya Sabha or Academy are the hurdles which Meghalaya is facing in getting the official recognition.
However, Soroj Sangma, president of Goalpara-based Garo Sahitya Sabha, said there is a registered literary organisation, Garo Literature Society in Garo Hills with its headquarters in Tura, which would be equal to Sahitya Sabha or Sahitya Academy.
Though the literary body is neither named as Sahitya Sabha nor Sahitya Academy, the Society is functioning like a Sahitya Academy, he said.
“Therefore, the question of not having Garo as medium of instruction nor the absence of a Sahitya body should not arise,” Sangma said.
He also pointed out that in two districts, Goalpara and Kamrup in Assam, the LP and ME schools located in the Garo areas are all Garo medium schools where the medium of instruction is Garo.
The children are taught in Garo and the books are written in Garo language.
There is also a registered literary organisation of the Garo people living in Assam. The organisation is named the Garo Sahitya Sabha with headquarters at Bhalukdubi under Goalpara district.
