SHILLONG: The BJP in Meghalaya has been asked by the central leadership to assess the situation and find out if it is feasible for the party to field candidates from Shillong and Tura seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections apart from fielding a candidate in Selsella in the Assembly by-polls.
Informing this here on Wednesday, BJP leader and Cabinet Minister, AL Hek said that they have held preliminary discussions on the matter with the some central leaders.
On his personal note, Hek reiterated that the party must set up candidates from Shillong and Tura seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections but a final call on the matter would be taken by the central leadership
“ My assessment is that in Shillong city, we have a very good chances in Shillong city if we have a good candidate and in Tura we will have to make more efforts,” Hek said while adding that people in Lok Sabha elections usually vote for a national party be it Congress or BJP
“ If we have a common candidate, we will have no choice and we will appeal to the public to vote for the common candidate, Hek said
When asked about the recent statements of UDP where it reportedly hinted of problems within the MDA alliance if there is no consensus for common candidate, Hek said that the UDP had the right to express their point and there would be no issue or differences
He also said that UDP did not issue any such threat in the recently held MDA meeting
When asked if the BJP has zeroed down on any candidate for the Lok Sabha polls, Hek said that the party was in discussions with some prominent political leaders of the state.
