TURA: A case of corruption in the education department has come to the fore with two school inspectors (Sis) from Jirang and Umpling Block in Ri-Bhoi being accused of appointing two non-Garo teachers in a Garo Medium Lower Primary School in return for cash.
The Association for Socio Economic Development (ASED) along with the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) from Ri-Bhoi has written to the Director of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) in Shillong, demanding the immediate transfer of the two SIs as well as the removal of the non-Garo teachers.
According to the organisations, the two non-Garo teachers were allegedly appointed after an amount of Rs 2 lakh was paid to the officials.
“These teachers who were appointed have no Garo vernacular subject taken in their Secondary and Higher Secondary courses. Now they are unable to teach Garo to the students,” claimed T N Sangma, the president of the local GSU unit.
The organisations also alleged that many teachers in the area who have been appointed under the SSA have used fake certificates to get their jobs.
