SHILLONG: Farmers who sell their produce at Iewduh boycotted the traditional market on Monday in protest against anomalies in weight of the produce sold there.
Members of the Hill Farmers Union (HFU) on Monday did not sell agricultural produces at Iewduh as a mark of protest against deduction of actual weight of goods.
HFU president Commander Shangpliang said some farmers were not informed about the protest and they went to sell their produces but marketing was very thin.
Farmers under the banner of HFU are protesting against deduction of actual weight of goods and they feel that there has been deduction of weight by a few kilograms from the actual weight of agricultural produces being sold at Iewduh.
Shangpliang said they have decided to go to Iewduh on November 7 and will now allow weighing their produces even as he added that the Union has decided to request the state government to setup vegetable markets in Mawryngkneng and Umiam side.
“We have also decided to follow up on the memorandum which we had submitted to the Chief Minister which talks about agricultural policy, MSP and crop insurance,” he added.
He said the union will not rest till the problem is removed and urged the farmers to unite and fight together to solve the problem.
