FIR against mob for beating up rape accused
NONGPOH: Three days after a rape accused was beaten up by an angry mob, Ri Bhoi police on Monday filed a suo motu FIR against those involved in charges of attempt to murder. The accused had attempted to rape a minor girl but could not succeed and molested her. He was booked under the POCSO Act, 2012. When the locals found out about this, they beat him up. The video of the mob fury went viral on social media and rumours spread that he succumbed to the injuries. However, police said the man is in ICU at Shillong Civil hospital and he is recovering.
NDRF to conduct familiarisation exercise in East Garo Hills
WILLIAMNAGAR: A familiarization exercise for community awareness on ‘Disaster Management’ will be conducted by the 1st Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Assam in Garo Hills from November 12 to 18. According to an official release, the awareness programme for teachers, students and staff of Williamnagar Govt. College will be held on the college premises and at DRDA Hall for police officers of the district on November 12 and 13. There will also be a programme on flood mitigation measures at Warimagre in Williamnagar for government officers and staff on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on November 15 and 16. On November 17, an awareness programme will be conducted for merchants and traders at Rongjeng Bazaar.
Money stolen from school donation box
NONGSTOIN: A group of miscreants on Monday broke into Lowingwell Secondary School in New Nongstoin and stole Rs 10,000 from the donation box. Daplin Wahlang of Mawbyrshem village informed the police that miscreants entered the school at dawn and stole the cash. An FIR has been filed and the investigation is on.

NCC inter group competitions camp concludes
SHILLONG: The combined annual training cum inter group competitions camp organised by NCC Group HQ Shillong under the aegis of the NCC Directorate North Eastern Region (NER) concluded at Umroi Cantt on Sunday. The camp kicked off on Oct 26 with an aim to select the North Eastern Region NCC contingent for the Republic Day Camp to be held in New Delhi in January. Various competitions were conducted during the camp which saw the participation of 500 NCC cadets from across the North East Region. Major General Raju Chauhan, Additional Director General, NER attended the closing ceremony on Saturday and congratulated the cadets on the successful completion of the camp. He also complemented the Shillong group and the training team on the excellent conduct of the camp and distributed the prizes to the cadets who had displayed exemplary performance during the various inter group competitions.
Workshop on resource management in Tura
TURA: A one day district level workshop on ‘Solid Liquid Resource Management’ (SLRM) for village level functionaries was held at SMELC Conference Hall, Dakopgre in Tura on Monday. The programme was organised by the State Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the District Swachh Bharat Mission (G), West Garo Hills. Village level functionaries from six Blocks of the district participated in the workshop. Swapnil Tembe, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division, Dadenggre spoke about the Solid Liquid Resource Management which aims to reduce the production of kitchen and other bio-degradable waste by turning it into manure using vermin-compost methods for solid waste and soakpits for liquid waste. He also informed the participants that non-biodegradable waste will be collected at one place and sold to scrap dealers and hence the term Solid Liquid Resource Management instead of Solid Liquid Waste Management. “This waste collection and management would be done by self help groups of the respective villages,” said Tembe. While delivering the keynote address, Saljrang D Sangma, Executive Engineer (PHE) and Member Secretary, District Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), West Garo Hills, Tura informed the participants on how to manage solid liquid waste and said that biodegradable waste can be made into manure while non-biodegradable products can be sold to scrap dealers.
Saras Aajeevika Mela held for SHGs in Tura
TURA: The Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS), Tura recently organised a Saras Aajeveeka Mela under DAY-NRLM at Police Parade Ground in Tura. Local entrepreneurs and members of women’s Self Help Groups (SHG) participated in the mela and displayed their home made products comprising of flowers, food items and soft toys made from locally available materials. Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana- National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) is one of the flagship programmes of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India with an aim to alleviate poverty. The programme aims to organise rural women into institutions like Self Help Groups and federations and to ensure their financial inclusion and livelihood support. Since its launch in 2011, the Mission has spread to 4456 Blocks of 584 Districts across 29 states and 5 Union Territories across the country.
Cooks under MDM demand grade IV pay in GH
TURA: Cooks and helpers in lower and upper primary schools in Garo Hills have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma urging the minister to upgrade their salaries to Grade IV scale. The workers under the banner of the Cook cum Helpers Association, Selsella Zone, reminded the CM of the promises to look into the grievances faced by lower and upper primary school teachers and urged him to look into their demand at the earliest. “We as cooks for MDM are getting a meager Rs 1000/- per month. We hope that the government will fulfill our demands so that we too can make a decent living,” the association said.
Year of the Youth of Tura Diocese concludes
TURA: The various activities and programmes held throughout the year by the Diocesan Youth Commission marked the successful celebration of the ‘Year of the Youth’ among Catholics in Tura. The Diocese of Tura dedicated the year 2018 as the Year of the Youth in view of the Synod 2018 which was held at the Vatican recently. During the observation, various activities were held and on November 3, 4 and 5, delegates from each parish turned up for the celebration of the ‘Conclusion of Year of Youth and the annual Eucharistic procession. On Saturday afternoon, various competitions were conducted at Cathedral Hall. Fr Lawrence Khing, Youth Director of the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM) celebrated the Holy Mass at 3:00 pm and urged the youth to stay loyal to the church. Later, the core team members led the Taize Prayer at Sacred Heart Shrine. Former Diocesan Executive Committee (DExCo) members were also honored during the felicitation. On Sunday, Fr Lawrence held a short session on the activities of the youth in Kohima. Around 174 delegates from different parishes in Garo Hills participated in the Eucharistic Procession at the Sacred Heart Shrine. A report on the year was given by Fr Lyngdoh followed by the youth prayer which preceeded the youth anthem sung by the delegates on the final day.
