SHILLONG: Senior news photographer, Warton Lytan (52), fondly called Bah Ton, passed away on Tuesday evening in the city after a prolonged illness.
He was serving as the news photographer, UB Photos, a photo agency till his death. He was associated with a number of news organizations and made contributions to several newspapers.
The Shillong Press Club remembered him as an affable and jovial person.
Ton began his journey in photo journalism way back in the late 80s after a successful stint as the founding general secretary of the Hill Farmers’ Union, an organisation that continues to fight for the welfare and rights of farmers.
“Ton was popular with everyone for the fact that he was simple, yet never once did he shirk away from discharging his professional duties. Be it politics, curfew, chaos, Assembly and District Council sessions, government or private events and functions, he would always be the first one to reach the spot. Short in stature but he would always be the tallest everywhere,” the Press Club statement said.
Ton’s unique and simple manner of communicating with people won him friends all over, the Club said.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association (MEPA) said Ton has contributed immensely capturing myriad moments through his lens.
MEPA added that he was a hardworking person and dedicated his life to the cause of journalism with courage and conviction.
The current president of Hill Farmers’ Union, Commander Shangpliang also condoled his death.
