JOWAI: The Wapung C&RD Block has been shifted to its original location at Khliehriat retaining the old name, Khliehriat C&RD Block.
This was announced by East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, FM Dopth based on the directive of the government.
The shifting of the Khliehriat C&RD Block was done after Khliehriat town has become the district headquarters of the bifurcated Jaintia Hills district by creating the new East Jaintia Hills district.
After the creation of the East Jaintia Hills district, the state government during the tenure of then C&RD Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar had decided to shift the Khliehriat C&RD Block to Wapung.
The Dorbar Shnong of Wapungskur, Wapungshnong had donated land free of cost for the construction site for the new office.
However, sources said that the move was cancelled by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma just because the then sitting MLA Justine Dkhar had decided to join BJP instead of contesting the 2018 polls from Congress.
According to sources, Mukul wanted to project the present MLA of Sutnga-Narpuh Shitlang Pale during the last Assembly elections, and hence he passed another order for shifting the Wapung C&RD Block to Lumshnong.
DL Rymbai, a resident of Wapungskur, who is also a former social activist, had filed a PIL in the High Court in this connection.
Speaking to this correspondent, Rymbai said that he and his colleague will have to file another PIL since the government has re-shifted the Block Office again from Wapungskur to Khliehriat.
Residents of Lumshnong and the entire Narpuh Elaka had come forward to demand that the block office be shifted to Lumshnong.
