SHILLONG: Speaker Donkupar Roy on Friday urged residents of Tyrna village in East Khasi Hills to fence the sacred forest.
Addressing a gathering at the Tyrna Living Root Festival, Roy said the state government had once come up with a programme to fence the sacred forests. “If we get the opportunity, it is better we fence the sacred forests. Sacred forests are an example of how our ancestors took steps to preserve forests. In places where the sacred forests are abundant, the supply of water is also sufficient,” the speaker added.
The Tyrna Living Root Festival or the village tourism festival was held on Wednesday and Thursday where Roy was present as chief guest.
Roy urged the locals to be hospitable to tourists, both domestic and foreign, and added that tourism is another employment generation sector.
The festival saw cultural programmes from the state and Manipur.
