India secure 20 medals, including 4 gold at U-20 Asian Wrestling event
Pattaya, July 6: Indian wrestlers finished with an impressive haul of 20 medals, including four gold, seven silver and nine bronze at the Under-20 Asian Wrestling Championships here. India ensured consistent podium finishes across multiple weight divisions throughout the championship, securing top-three overall team rankings in both women’s wrestling and men’s freestyle. In women’s wrestling, India finished second on the podium with 184 points, falling just short of champions China (189 points) while outclassing third-placed Japan (142 points). The Indian men’s freestyle team finished third overall in the team standings with 152 points, behind winners Kazakhstan (170) and runners-up Iran (164). (PTI)
Hockey India names squad for Youth Hockey5s Asian C’ship camp
New DelhI, July 6: Hockey India on Monday named a 15-member squad for the sub-junior men’s national coaching camp to be held in Chandigarh from July 7 to 18 in preparation for the inaugural Youth Hockey5s Asian Championship. The tournament will be held in Muscat, Oman, from July 20 to 25. The camp will take place at Panjab University, Sector 14, Chandigarh, under the guidance of former India captain Sardar Singh. All 15 players in the camp were part of the Indian team that won the recently-concluded U-18 Men’s Asia Cup, beating hosts Japan 4-1 in the final. The two-week camp will focus on introducing the players to the tactical and technical demands of Hockey5s while sharpening their overall game through structured training sessions. (PTI)
Hope and Greaves lift WI to 318/4 in 2nd Test against Sri Lanka
North Sound (Antigua), July 6: Shai Hope and Justin Greaves shared an unbroken partnership of 174 runs for the fifth wicket as the West Indies reached 318/4 in its first innings, in reply to Sri Lanka’s 549/9 declared, at stumps on Sunday on the third day of the second Test. On a day of measured progress, only three wickets fell and 260 runs were added. Only 13 wickets have fallen in the first three days. Hope was 86 not out and Greaves 85 not out at the close of play, approaching their fifth and third Test centuries respectively. The pair also were closing in on their highest partnership of 196, achieved against New Zealand in Christchurch in December. The West Indies lead the two-Test series after winning the first Test by an innings and 217 runs. (AP)
India A to tour New Zealand ahead of senior series
New Delhi, July 6: India A will undertake a shadow tour of New Zealand ahead of the senior team’s multi-format series in the country, with the itinerary comprising three List A matches and two first-class games that could feature a handful of players from the national Test squad. The India A assignment is expected to serve as a preparatory platform for players in contention for the senior side, with some first-team cricketers likely to be drafted into the squad to gain valuable match practice in New Zealand conditions before the marquee series. The tour schedule includes three 50-over games followed by two first-class ‘Tests’, allowing the team management to assess both red-ball and white-ball options ahead of the senior team’s engagements. Meanwhile, India’s Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka is tentatively scheduled to depart on August 4 or 5. The team is expected to play a warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Board President’s XI starting August 8 as part of its acclimatisation programme before the opening Test, which is slated to begin on August 15. The preparatory fixture is aimed at helping the players adjust to local conditions before the start of the two-match Test series. (PTI)
