SHILLONG: The youth wing of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) closed the IGNOU office in NEHU for opening its office on the occasion of Nongkrem Dance on Monday.

In a statement issued here, the KHNAM maintained that on such occasions, government or private offices should remain close which is deemed as special days for the indigenous people.

The KHNAM urged the state government to send a notification to these offices from the beginning of the year informing them about the special occasions.

In a separate incident, KHNAM youth wing president Thomas Passah met the OC of Police in charge of traditional market, Iewduh on non-tribals trading without labour license or trading license.

Criticizing the Hima Mylliem and Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), KHNAM said the upsurge of illegal immigrants pose a threat to the indigenous people of the state.

“From now on, it is time to cancel issuing trading licenses to non-tribals who are not genuine,” Passah said. IANS
