SHILLONG: Meghalaya Home Minister, James Sangma informed that on Thursday the police department had apprehended one more prime suspect, a lady,  in connection with the case of attack on CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma on November 8 last at Sohshrieh, East Jaintia Hills.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said more names of the people directly responsible for the assault would come out as the investigation progressed.

Asked if she was the same lady who snatched the keys and pulled out Agnes and Amita, “I don’t want to go into the details of that. She has been apprehended based on the investigation carried out. The police will be issuing a formal statement regarding that.”

According to James, the police department was able to make arrests within 36 hours of the occurrence of the incident and assured government will take swift action against the perpetrators.

Asked if the government will constitute a judicial probe into the incident, he said the assault was strictly a police case.

“Investigation is going on and arrests have been made and there have been breakthroughs. As of now, I don’t see any need for judicial probe into the incident,” he said.

When asked whether any judicial inquiry would be initiated on the alleged nexus between the police and the mining mafia, James said the matter was being examined even as judicial enquiry would be set up if the need arose.

On the demand to include criminal conspiracy and common intention under the IPC Section, James refused to comment in terms of the Sections to be applied asserting that police are more than well-equipped to understand the situation and understand what are the relevant sections under which the case needs to be registered.
