Trust, responsibility crucial in journalism: Conrad Sangma

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said ethics of trust and responsibility was crucial in journalism with a stressed on fake news being a major concern.

He was speaking as the chief guest at National Press Day on the theme, “Journalistic ethics in the digital age,” at Shillong Club on Friday.

“It is about being responsible in whatever we do. Trust is also another very important word, we have to build up the system of trust,” he said.

Speaking about the catching up with the age of digitization, he said the present times were very exciting times and the opportunities available in the digital age today must also be harnessed by the Press fraternity.

“Digital age is something that is really powerful and it is changing every aspect of life. Digital world is so dynamic that it is almost impossible to have any kind of a law that will be able to curb the entire thing,” Sangma said.

According to Sangma, it is important to ensure that proper mechanism, proper laws and policies, technology is put in place to ensure digital information and all the crimes which are being committed are stopped to a large extent.

 He added the government would take aggressive measures to ensure that technology was put in place monitoring cyber crime.

Stating that there are challenges faced in implementing some of the demands of the welfare benefits of the journalists, the CM assured that important ones would be taken them up first.
