Doordarshan NE should be restarted: TV producers
Shillong: A delegation of Television Producers Forum of North East India’ met Chief Minister of Conrad K. Sangma at his office chamber and submitted a memorandum, requesting the Prime Minister of India through the Chief Minister to re-start North East Special Software Development package, which was started in 1996. But for no logical reason, the same was stopped in the year 2012. The delegation apprised the Chief Minister that, because of the stoppage of the commissioned programme of Doordarshan, a large number of technicians like Cameraman, Video Editor, Music Director, Cinematographers, Script Writers, Artists and Directors are without any job. The CM assured that, he will take up the matter with appropriate authority as demands are genuine. He also felt that, in view of the Look East Policy of Government of India, it is quite appropriate that we showcase the North East in right earnest to the rest of the country and the world.
Local artisans represent state at intl conference on handlooms
SHILLONG: The local weavers and embroiderers from the state are presently taking part in the week-long training-cum-awareness international conference on handlooms called the “Chenetha Chetikala Sambaralu” in Chirala town, Andhra Pradesh from November 11 to 18. This conference serves as a platform to bring together various stakeholders to work together in reviving and advancing India’s diverse handlooms. North East Slow Food & Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) works closely with these local artisans to promote the indigenous art of eri silk weaving and ‘Khneng’ embroidery. The delegates from Meghalaya are Basiewdor Mujai from Khweng, Ri-Bhoi District, Victory Synrem and Asibon Mawa from Mustoh, East Khasi Hills District.
Retired college teachers’ association meets CM
Shillong: The NE Region Zonal meeting of All India Federation of Retired University and College Teachers’ Organisations (AIFRUCTO)) was held recently at Shillong College, Shillong which took many important resolutions. As per the decision of the meeting, a joint delegation of AIFRUCTO and Meghalaya Retired college Teacher’s Association (MRCTA) met Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, on Friday in Shillong. The associations requested the chief minister to extend pension to all the retired teachers of aided colleges of Meghalaya at the earliest. They further requested him for his intervention in the matter. Conrad assured that an interim measure will be taken before setting in concrete steps.
Street play awareness on child sexual abuse
Shillong: Childline, Bosco Integrated Development Society, Shillong in collaboration with the Social Work Department of Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong conducted an awareness through street play on child sexual abuse at Mawngap market on Friday. The street play performed by the students has increased the level of awareness of the people and has highlighted necessary intervention steps to report crime against children to the police or Childline. Besides, the street play, the in-Charge of Mawngap Police Outpost and the co-ordinator of Childline delivered speeches on the Protection of children from Sexual Offences Act 2012. The speakers also spoke about the ‘safe’ and “unsafe touch’’ which should be taught to children by parents and care takers through simple explanations, stories or drawings.
Entrepreneurship summit at IIM
SHILLONG: IIM Shillong is all set to host its seventh edition of entrepreneurship summit, EmergE on November 17 and 18 at IIM Shillong, Mayurbhanj Complex. EmergE aims to celebrate the true spirit of entrepreneurship and to provide a platform for sharing of ideas among industry, academia and entrepreneurs. The theme is Embracing Northeast that resonates with the modern-day startup ideas and intends to mine the opportunities that lie untapped within the serenading lands of Northeast India.
Reliving old Shillong
SHILLONG: Shillong Times written by Nilanjan P Choudhury was launched at Dylan’s Café on Friday. The author, who was born and brought up in the hill city, read excerpts from the book and went down the memory lane with former minister Robert G Lyngdoh and other old-timers who were present on the occasion. “The best thing about writing a book is that you meet so many old friends… and you make so many new friends through a book,” said the author as he reminisced about the “good old days” in Shillong. Author and journalist Samrat Choudhury was the moderator.
