MAWKYRWAT: Political leaders should be the voice of people and abstain from speaking for self-interest, said president of the HSPDP Mawkyrwat unit Nolip Lyngdoh on Friday.
Addressing a gathering at a function that was organised to welcome new entrants from other parties, Lyngdoh said HSPDP should be careful about selecting candidates.
“Many political parties failed in the (last) election because leaders spoke for their self-interest and not for the majority of the people… As leaders we should speak for the majority and not for ourselves or someone we loved,” he added.
Lyngdoh called upon HSPDP supporters to rally for “any candidate that the party selected for the upcoming council election”.
“Let us work together without thinking about self-interest so that we can achieve our goals,” he added. Four leaders from HSPDP want to contest the council election. They are Lyngdoh, Manstudy Nongrem, MDC from Langrin, Donbok Kharjahrin, treasurer of the HSPDP Mawkyrwat, and Babu Pros Wanniang, a well-known leader in the region.
Mawkyrwat MLA and secretary of the party’s election committee Renikton L Tongkhar said the party might release the first list of council poll candidates by November 25.
Sixty-two leaders and supporters of the UDP and the PDF joined the party and vowed to work hard to ensure HSPDP’s victory in Mawkyrwat council seat.
The team of 27 from the PDF was led by former president of Mawkyrwat unit YG Lyngdoh, who resigned from the party after the Assembly election. The 35-strong UDP team was led by working president of Mawkyrwat circle Jeslanroy Nongsiej and general secretary Synshar Lyngkhoi. The former president of UDP Mawkyrwat, Tyngshain Kharlyngdoh, and former general secretary Banteibok Marbaniang who supported KHNAM candidate Enbin K Raswai in the last Assembly election also joined the HSPDP.
