SHILLONG: The NCP which is an ally in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has asserted that the party will think of extending its support to the common candidate of the MDA for Lok Sabha polls depending on the quality of the candidate.
“ If MDA puts up a common candidate seriously, we will think over it and I cannot assure that we will just support any common candidate,” NCP state president, Saleng Sangma said while maintaining that the party at first would look at the common candidate and the candidate should be acceptable to all.
Stating that every party has their own principle and minds to setup their own candidate, he, however, added that the common candidate should have a common symbol or else there are fears of misunderstandings in between.
It may be mentioned that the idea of a common symbol for the proposed candidate was mooted by the Independent MLA Lambor Malngiang and the matter will be discussed in the proposed MDA meeting.
When asked if the NCP is contemplating to put up its own candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, he informed that the matter had been already taken up with the central leadership of the party and they were awaiting a direction from the party headquarters.
It may be mentioned that UDP and HSPDP have already named their candidates as the proposed common candidate. While UDP has proposed the name of its former MLA Jemino Mawthoh, HSPDP has proposed the name of its MLA Renikton Lyngdoh and their names will be taken up before the MDA meeting for discussion
