According to superintendent of police (SP) R T G Momin, police were tipped off about the presence of the criminal, identified as Phillington Ch Marak (26), roaming in Samgong bazaar of Williamnagar. Officers and SF-10 commandos were rushed to the spot and the kidnapper was apprehended.

It was during interrogation that he revealed to police about brandishing a 9mm pistol to abduct the ginger trader, Tapos Day, from Bansma Awe while the victim was heading to Rongsak market to purchase ginger, last week. They took away seventy thousand rupees belonging to the victim.

He confessed that in the aftermath of the abduction and relentless police operations and lookout notices passed on from village to village, he fled to Williamnagar and buried the pistol outside his house compound at Tambu Ading locality of the town.

Police later unearthed the weapon from his compound.

With the arrest of the main gang members and recovery of the weapon used in the crime, East Garo Hills police have literally solved the case and brought to book the perpetrators.
