SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) remembered Indira Gandhi on her 101st birth anniversary at Congress Bhawan in the city on Monday and attacked the BJP led NDA for not respecting leaders like Indira and dividing the country .
The function was attended by its president, Celestine Lyngdoh, James S. Lyngdoh, working president, MLAs, PCC office bearers and other leaders.
Those who spoke on the occasion included Lyngdoh, Congress MLA P. T Sawkmie, MPCC general secretary Manash Das Gupta and president, Shillong City Mahila Congress Mebaailang Kharkongor.
While paying glowing tributes to the former Prime Minister, the leaders spoke of the determination and courage of the ‘Iron Lady of India’, who never hesitated to take steps for the interest of the country and its people.
In this context, they recalled how Gandhi had ‘bulldozed’ all the opposition that came on her way, during creation of Bangladesh or granting statehood to the tribal people of North East, including Meghalaya, to “allow them to grow according to their own genius”.
They also recalled her contribution in making India strong and self radiant.Attacking the BJP/RSS combine, the leaders condemned the union government for undermining the greatness of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Indira Gandhi and others. There are also clandestine attempts to observe December 25 as ‘Good Governance Day’ & ‘Good Friday’ as ‘Digital India Day’.The meeting also deplored that the BJP/RSS leaders have attempted to hijack Sardar Vallabhai Patel, as their hero, who was infact, the first Congress Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of Independent India, and who had banned RSS following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The meeting also said when Sardar Patel had given the just two lettered slogan “One India” in order to unify the country, BJP & RSS have been distorting its spirit by trying to extend his slogan as “One India, One Culture, One Religion etc”, which is an attempt to divide the country on communal lines and it is the biggest disrespect to Sadar Patel.
