GUWAHATI: A 20-year-old ULFA (I) cadre, arrested by police from Bahona Naborachuk under Bhogdoi police outpost in Upper Assam’s Jorhat town on Monday night, had undergone training under GNLA in Garo Hills, police sources confirmed.
Dewal Jyoti Dutta alias Diwar Axom had joined the militant outfit in May last year and had undergone arms training under Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), reportedly in East Garo Hills and west Garo Hills of Meghalaya, police said.
“We had come to know on the basis of secret information that he was taking shelter in Jorhat and had come to the town to attend his elder sister’s marriage. Subsequently, we succeeded in nabbing him,” a police official in Jorhat said.
The youth also confessed before the media that he had served as the personal security guard of ULFA (I) leader Drishti Rajkhowa. “I was working for him for the past six to seven months,” Deval Jyoti told a section of the media.
The development comes at a time when there are reports of the militant outfit regrouping by hiring young men and women.
Only recently, Tinsukia police had confirmed that Munna Baruah, the 24-year-old nephew of ULFA (I) commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah, had joined the outfit after he had gone missing from Digboi.
There have been reports recently of many youths joining the outfit over the past few months.
