SHILLONG: The deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills has shot off a letter to the district school education officer to withhold the annual examination results of those students who refuse to go for Measles-Rubella vaccination.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said, “It is correct. Their results will be withheld till such time the parents justify why their children did not participate in the Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign.”
The move comes in the wake of low coverage of the vaccination campaign in the district as compared to other districts.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has expressed strong opposition to the notification.
Stating that this violates the right of students, the KSU said the state government should create more awareness about the need for the vaccine and should not withhold results.
The union demanded that the state government revoke the notification for the benefit of students.
The FKJGP also condemned and opposed the move of the district administration and said the decision to administer the vaccine is up to parents.
