NEHU convocation
SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University will hold its XXV Convocation at the Convocation Hall, Shillong Campus from 11 am on Wednesday. Governor Tathagata Roy will be the chief guest and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will be the guest of honour. Professor S.K. Srivastava, Vice-Chancellor, NEHU will preside over the convocation.
KHNAM organises meeting; elects office bearers
SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) Lawsohtun unit recently convened a general meeting at the Dorbar Hall, Lawsohtun. In the meeting various issues were discussed including non-tribal drivers driving local taxis without labour license from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). The new office bearers of the unit are president -Pynshngainlang Kurkalang, vice president -Micky Thabah, secretary -Micheal Lyngdoh, assistant secretaries- Fabian Tober and Kebeny Nongkynrih, organising secretary -Wanskhem Lapang beside other members. The girls’ wing of the unit was also formed.
Rally to create awareness on violence against women
SHILLONG: The North East Network, Meghalaya in collaboration with Seng Kynthei Shnong Mawngap Lumparing organised a rally marking the 16 Days Activism against Gender Based Violence with the theme ‘End Gender-Based Violence in the World of Work’ which was held in Mawngap, Mawphlang Block, East Khasi Hills District on Monday. The aim of the rally was to creating mass awareness on the need to build safe spaces for women both at the public and private sphere. The chief guest for the rally was B. Ranee, (MCS), Block Development Officer of Mawphlang Block. The rally concluded with a street play by the students of MSW 3rd semester, Martin Luther Christian University on the same. Around 300 people participated in the rally including women groups from 6 localities of Mawngap Pyllun, Youth Groups from Mawngap Pyllun and Mawphlang as well as eight institutions in the vicinity of Mawngap area.
Garo youths get platform to learn traditional art forms
TURA: Youths from Tura and Garo Hills in general are being provided an opportunity to learn various traditional art forms like playing traditional musical instruments as well as making them and other items from wood and bamboo including the skills needed to perform the Wangala Dance, in a Traditional Musical Instruments Workshop being organized by the A’chik Literature Society at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School in Tura from December 3 to 8.
SWKH’s school silver jubilee celebration ends
MAWKYRWAT: The Pyndenkseh Sepngi Upper Primary School on Monday concluded the silver jubilee celebration with a meeting held on the school premises where local MLA and MIDC Chairman, Renik L. Tongkhar was present as chief guest. The school was established in 1993 by some prominent leaders of the village who saw the importance of education that needs to be promoted in the area. Speaking at the programme as chief guest, Tongkhar lauded the founding members of the school who stood firm to take education forward even though they had to face lot of problems.
Pauline book & media centre expansion
SHILLONG: Pauline Book & Media Centre at Laitumkhrah, has got a face lift offering more space for books and religious articles with the inauguration of additional space at the centre by Vicar General Rev Fr John Madur on Monday. In his brief speech, Fr Madur said he was hopeful that many would take the opportunity to purchase the number of good books which the centre has to offer, adding “Reading a good book is a good habit.” Likening the reading of good books “to a prayer,” Fr Madur said by reading a good book we give glory to the Father in Heaven.
Winter Tourism fest in GH, Browny to hit the stage
TURA: A colourful two-day tourism event is being organised at upcoming tourism site in Rongma Gitil village of North Garo Hills from November 30 to December 1.The tourism fest is being organized by the Rongma Gitil Tourism Committee (RGTC) in collaboration with the NGH district administration and the Kharkutta C&RD Block. Among the highlights of the event will be a ‘Riprap’ night with legendary Garo singer Browny mesmerising the crowds on December 1 evening. Record number of spectators and ,music lovers from the length and breadth of Garo Hills are expected to converge on the musical night.
