State observes National Milk Day

TURA/JOWAI: The National Milk Day was celebrated on Monday at Multi Facility Centre at Asanang in West Garo Hills, which was attended by the Additional Deputy Commissioner and Project Director, DRDA, AM Sangma, as the chief guest. The programme was organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest congratulated the progressive dairy farmers in the region and urged them to avail the opportunity provided by the concerned department as well as other related line departments and take dairy farming to greater heights in future.
The additional DC distributed cash prize of Rs 5,000 to each dairy farmer and certificates to Litha B Marak from Chidekgre and Rahen N Sangma from Sanchonggre, who have been awarded for their hard work, dedication in terms of quality, quantity and continuous supply of milk to the Central Dairy Farm at Ganol.
Meanwhile, the special guest of the function distributed the prizes to the winners of essay and drawing competition which was held earlier for the school students of Rongram block.
In Ampati, the occasion was celebrated in a programme organised by the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department to mark the 97th birth anniversary of the father of White Revolution in India Verghese Kurien. A large number of dairy farmers and members of Dairy Cooperative Societies from across the district and Nokmas, officials of the line departments and students participated in the programme.
All the participants and guests at the celebration were offered a glass of milk produced by local dairy farmers. High-yielding variety of cows and dairy products were also displayed at stalls at the venue.
Meanwhile, the office of District A.H and Veterinary celebrated the National Milk Day at its Jowai Dairy plant Campus at Mooralong in which West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Garod LSN Dykes was the chief guest.
The DC said that milk is an essential diet for maintaining good health. Looking at the records of the state it is found that West Jaintia Hills is considered as a ‘Critical District’ in terms of nutrition, as majority of the adolescence is malnutritious due to imbalance diet. He persuaded every household especially in rural areas to understand the importance of milk intake.
To create awareness among the students on the importance and the nutritional benefits of milk, the office of AH & Veterinary had  orgainsed essay and drawing competition on November 10 at Government Higher Secondary School, Jowai on the topics ‘Pasteurized Milk’ and ‘Innovative Dairy Farming’. The winners were awarded cash prize, mementos and certificates.
The office had also awarded Philanderwell Lyngdoh, who had been associated himself since 1989, and Marcolus Lyngdoh from Mookaaiw (since 1991) for providing milk to Jowai Dairy plant.
The office had also donated cash and milk package to KJP Synnod Mihngi orphanage home Wahiajer and to NEIMA orphanage home Sahsniang.
