SHILLONG: Avenues, A city-based centre for skill development, has recently conducted a one-hour workshop for Classes VIII and IX students of Ri Bhoi Higher Secondary School in Nongpoh.
Students were taught to work as a team, rediscover personal values and basic skills of communication.
Appreciating the initiative, principal of the school N Radu said these workshops help in students’ personal development and growth, adding “I believe that if these youth are given the right kind of guidance at the right time, they can bring about change in our society.”
One of the teachers, L. Rani said such workshops are the need of the hour as students come from different backgrounds, some of whom do not have the required skills to cope with various challenges.
Another teacher, ML Nonglait, said that this workshop has been a blessing to the students of this school.
“This is the first of its kind in Ri Bhoi district and one may think that such workshops are meaningless, but they are missing the bigger picture. Here is where you teach children to become better and respectful human beings,” he added.
The teacher also stated that such workshops should be conducted often not only for the older students but for children as well especially in building confidence and communication skills.
The same level of excitement and enthusiasm was also expressed by the students, who by the end of the session, were visibly stirred, with heightened levels of determination to make a difference and live meaningful lives.
Avenues winter workshop
It may be mentioned that Avenues will also hold the 16th Annual Winter Workshops starting December 10 on the theme ‘This is Me’ which is aimed at helping students identify their values that will stand by them their entire lives.
