House panel to review maternal, infant death rates

SHILLONG: The Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment will review the Health and Family Welfare and the Social Welfare departments to find out the reason for high maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) in Meghalaya.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, member of the committee HM Shangpliang said, “Will review on why the MMR and IMR are high and find the status of medicines for pregnant mothers in the state,” he said.
The committee has also called the Social Welfare Department to review the schemes relating to women and the progress made so far.
He added that the committee will also look forward to the report to be placed by DC East Jaintia Hills on some important issues that the DC and the SP have not been able to furnish.
