LJP petitions PM on languages, border dispute

SHILLONG: The state unit of the Lok Janshakti Party has petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding inclusion of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo languages in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The letter written by the state president of the party also sought intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office in solving the boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
The party said that the early passing and implementation of Village Administration Bill (VAB) empowering local chiefs to exercise their powers constitutionally will help the state preserve and protect their ethnic culture, custom and tradition and the real identity of the state.
It also demanded for waiver of farmers’ loans in the state, besides intervention of the PMO in pursuing and solving the matter of development of the State and verification of scheme funds whether they were utilised properly, proper roads and connectivity, especially in rural areas, unemployment, and to initiate peace negotiations from militant organisations existing in the state.
