Guv inaugurates college compound, hall in Mairang
NONGSTOIN: Governor Tathagata Roy on Friday inaugurated the newly-constructed compound and sound proof conference hall of Khatsawphra College in Mairang.
Also present on the occasion were West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T. Lyngwa, SP GD Kharwanlang, SDO Civil Mairang, BDO Mairang and members of the college governing body, besides others.
Addressing the gathering, the governor expressed happiness at being associated with the college and its achievements. He congratulated members of the governing body for providing necessary funds to make the college equipped with all necessities to be at par with other top colleges in the state.
B. Nongrum, principal and secretary of the governing body, informed that the college was established in 2015 with only 30 students and now has 430 students in the Commerce and Arts streams.

Review of NSSO surveys in NE
SHILLONG: With an aim to review and monitor the progress of all socio-economic surveys conducted in Northeastern states by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, the Head and Additional Director General of Field Operations Division, NSSO, Delhi, Rakesh Kumar and Head of North-East Region of Field Operations Division, NSSO, Guwahati, Harbinder Singh, conducted a meeting with all senior officers NSSO in the Northeastern states at Assam House here on Friday.
Kumar expressed satisfaction over the progress of work and issued necessary guidelines to all field officers for smooth continuance of IT-enabled survey mechanism. Singh laid stress on special care in the hilly areas of the Northeastern states for Periodic Labour Force Survey and Annual Survey of Industries.

Five-day yoga camp in city
SHILLONG: A free yoga camp will be organised on the premises of Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS) here in Jail Road from December 18 to 22.
Swami Uttamananda Maharaj from BSS Headquarters, Kolkata, who has been trained in yoga by Swami Ramdev at Patanjali Yogapith, Hardwar, will supervise the camp everyday from 6:45 am till 8:30 am and 5:30 pm till 6:30 pm. Female participants will be under the supervision of yoga expert Pratima Devi, also from Kolkata.
The camp is being organised under the direction of BSS Headquarters, General Secretary, Swami Bishwatmananda Maharaj. Interested yoga aspirants may register their names at the BSS office.

Church silver jubilee
Nongpoh: The silver jubilee celebrations of the Seng Samla Katholik Byrwa CMC kicked off on Friday with a function held at Byrwa village in Ri Bhoi district.
Rocky A Marwein, a youth leader of the district, attended the inaugural ceremony of the Catholic church falling under the Umbir Parish.
Marwein congratulated the faithful in reaching a milestone of 25 years with a humble beginning in 1993. He asked them to work with a vision and strong determination to serve not just God alone but the community.
Singing and dancing competitions were the special attraction of the inaugural celebration performed by the local youths including children from the village.

Walk and learn programme
SHILLONG: 29 students of IIM Ahmedabad along with eminent professors, Anil Gupta and Navdeep Mathur, will be conducting a shodh yatra (learning walk) from December 8 to 12 in association with the State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE) and in coordination with the office of the BDOs of Mawryngkneng and Mawkynrew. The yatra will start from Smit and end at Umsawar village in Mawkynrew. The team will halt for the night at designated schools.
During the walk, the professors will lecture the IIM students, meet and interact with traditional heads, local community, children in the schools and other grassroots level functionary doing exemplary work in the livelihood, environment and social fields. A meeting with the chief secretary will also be held on December 12. The purpose of the yatra is to encourage students to learn from common people and nature, among others.

TURA: Aeroville Secondary School in Tura celebrated its silver jubilee on Friday in a grand function held at the Tura District Auditorium.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was the chief guest on the occasion while North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma was the guest of honour.
