SHILLONG: Contesting the council election for the first time, Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) vice president and youth wing president Thomas Passah asserted that the Khasi Hills Autonomous Democratic Council (KHADC) needs major overhaul.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Passah said, “The district council has been established for more than 60 years and the manner of functioning is shameful with no policy, making it unorganised. The DC needs major overhaul in all aspects.”
He questioned the transparency of the recruitment process in the KHADC and observed that the failure to advertise the vacancies reflected that corruption was rampant and backdoor appointments were made only to gain political mileage.
According to Passah, the acts in the District Council are not being implemented properly and cited the instance of the Trading by Non-Tribal Regulation Act, “which the KHADC is not taking seriously to implement”.
“Bills passed should not remain in the department of District Council Affairs and get stuck there as there are shortcomings in the Bills,” he said.
When asked on his pre-election jitters, he expressed confidence saying he has been preparing for it for a couple of months.
