Former NPP leader comes back to party
NONGSTOIN: Former MLA and Minister Ledishon Nongsiang joined the NPP amid a huge gathering in Shallang on Monday in the presence of MLA Gigur Myrthong, Setsing Dkhar general secretary NPP state unit, and others. Nongsiang was the founder of the NPP in Mawshynrut and left the party in 2018 after he was denied a party ticket in the last election. Nongsiang was formally welcomed back to the party in a programme chaired by Gardinal Sohshang, working president of NPP Mawshynrut Block. Nongsiang said he had decided to retire from politics but changed his mind after the MLA of Mawshynrut came to him with a request to work for the development of the constituency. Meanwhile, Myrthong thanked NPP supporters and said the time has come to work together and to focus on development. He also said new leaders who have joined the party will ease the job of an MLA by helping him to follow up on the various developments that have been proposed. Others who spoke during the programme include Dkhar and Alfred Kharbani, vice president of NPP district unit.
MeECL management informed of delayed payment of arrears
SHILLONG: The MeSEB Employees Staff Union has informed the management of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) about the untimely disbursement of monthly salary to the employees and the delay in payment of 10 per cent arrears accrued from the Revision of Pay (RoP), 2015. In a statement issued here, the union representatives expressed their displeasure regarding the non-payment of RoP arrears despite the sanction order of the corporation back in December for which it was informed that funds were available with the accounts wing of MeECL. The union representatives have also suggested measures for improvement of revenue collection for which the union representatives are ready to co-operate with the corporation. Meanwhile, the management assured the union that it would make an effort regarding the promotion of technical staff.
UDP unit to get women wing
MAWKYRWAT: The UDP Mawkyrwat circle, which is revamping the organisation, has decided to form a women’s wing. Anvil Lyngdoh, president of the UDP circle and candidate for the district council election, said the party will formally announce the formation of the women’s wing on Friday. The decision was taken at its executive meeting. “We have requested all the existing women members of the party and also those who are willing to join the party to attend the meeting,” Lyngdoh said. Lyngdoh also said as part of the plan to strengthen the party ahead of the upcoming district council election, the executive committee has set up eight zonal groups, each consisting of at least 20 members. “The particular group will take care in their own zonal area for strengthening of the existing primary units and sub units,” Lyngdoh said, adding that the group members, which are all leaders and party functionaries at the circle level, will tour the length and breadth of the constituency.
Poll training for hearing impaired
Ampati: A one-day training programme on ‘Accessible Election for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing People’ was conducted for the district officers of South West Garo Hills at the DRDA Conference Hall, Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Ampati on Monday. The programme was organised by Meghalaya Deaf Association (MDA) in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Shillong. Officers were sensitized on the issues and needs of deaf voters and were acquainted with basic sign languages as well as the basic election related symbols. The officers were also made to practise finger-spelling alphabets in sign language. The training was conducted by a team from Shillong comprising Ismart R Marak, MDA president, Shillong Unit Ferdinand Lyngdoh and Special Educator Bethany Society, Shillong Veronica Nonglait. Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ampati SC Laloo, EAC, WCR. Marak and DSP, Ampati SR Marak were also present during the programme.
BSF seizes cattle along border
SHILLONG: On December 28 around 2:10am BSF personnel stationed at Nongkhen BOP seized 30 oxen while on patrol along the international border under Dawki PS jurisdiction. The oxen were being smuggled to Bangladesh by unknown culprits who managed to escape. A case was registered at Dawki Police Station.
Diocesan Youth Convention ends
SHILLONG: The 28th Diocesan Youth Convention concluded at St. Joseph’s Church in Selsella on Monday. The convention which began on Friday witnessed the participation of 1111 young men and women. Fr. Jimberth K Marak, Parish Priest welcomed all the participants and Rev. Thomas Pullopillil, Bishop of Bongaigaon inaugurated the programme. Rev. Andrew R Marak delivered the key note address. Former chief minister Mukul Sangma and Dikanchi D Shira, MLA were present during the closing ceremony.
Drone, Chree and Dilma river festival concludes
Boko: The 3rd Drone, Chree and Dilma river festival concluded on Sunday at Ukium under Chaygaon constituency of Assam, which is a very remote village in the border of Meghalaya state.
