GUWAHATI: A group of leading citizens led by Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill (FACAAB) chairman, Hiren Gohain on Saturday made an appeal to the people of the Northeast to be wary of attempts by unscrupulous elements to resort to violent activities and thereby derail a peaceful, democratic movement against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The move comes in the wake of a couple of state BJP offices damaged by “protesters” in the past few days.
In the written appeal, Gohain along with various other signatories, urged people and organisations agitating against the Bill, to keep a close watch and see that such attacks are not carried out on any political party’s office, or for that matter, any office of organisations opposed to the anti-Bill movement.
“People must keep a close watch to thwart any ill intent by elements trying to give a violent colour to what is a peace agitation,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Gohain, a literary critic and poet as well, also joined a rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, organised by Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha Assam, an organisation championing the cause of physically challenged people, and urged people to take inspiration from the group and join the anti-Bill movement.
“I appeal to those sections of people who are yet to wake up to danger that this Bill might bring to take inspiration from the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha and join the movement.
The differently-abled are today taking the state and country forward,” Gohain said.
