Fire at CTS Memorial Haat at Nongpogh in early hours of Wednesday, 98 shops razed to ashes

NONGPOH : At least 98 shop were reduced to ashes after a major fire broke out at CTS Memorial Hat in Nongpoh town, this incident occurred in early hours of  Wednesday.

Local populace of Nongpoh Town rushed to the spot and also alarmed the fire service of Nongpoh. The inferno could be brought under control after four hours of efforts put in by state fire service personnel and the public. Fire tenders from Byrnihat and Umiam too were called o help in the operation.

The owner of the market, C.B Syiem informed that the reason of the fire was yet to be ascertained even as he put the estimated loss at Rs one crore. The CTS Memorial is under the management of the Synroplang Multi-Purpose Society.

“There were 300 stalls including RCC and wooden shops constructed in the market. Out of these , 98 shops were rampaged by the fire,” Syiem said.

Syiem lambasted the failure of Fire Service to control the inferno in time. He rues that there was just one fire tenders in Nongpho, which is a district headquarter.

He also informed that the Town Committee constituted  one  Committee that would  approached to the government for immediate financial assistance to the affected shopkeepers.

The District Administration sent the magistrate led by Kerwood Thabah as the Extra Assistant Commissioner and officers to the spot to assess the total loss.
