OBC group demands rights
SHILLONG: The president of Meghalaya Other Backward Classes Association, RG Pradhan, petitioned the Commissioner and Secretary of the Social Welfare Department reiterating the deprivation of rights of OBCs in the state. He said the joint committee of OBC, Shillong, did not receive any response from the government for redressal of grievances of OBCs domiciled in the state.
Pradhan added that Meghalaya has not conferred the rights of OBC to the eligible categories of non-tribals. He requested the officer to look into the grievances of the OBCs in the state.

KHNAM forms adhoc body
SHILLONG: The faction of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement led by Adelbert Nongrum on Tuesday formed the Adhoc Body of the KHNAM Youth Wing for Khasi and Jaintia Hills. The newly formed bodies consists of a total of 18 members representing different constituencies and were administered oath by the President of KHNAM CEC Adelbert Nongrum in the presence of  KHNAM Chairman , Glenbert Khongwir and secretary,  Strong Kharjana. With the Council elections around the corner, Nongrum said KHNAM should be strengthened in the entire Khasi and Jaintia hills. At the meeting, the KHNAM leader also criticized the government for bringing the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

GHADC gets new Secretary
TURA: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) now has a new Secretary after incumbent Secretary of the Executive Committee H A Sangma was given a promotion. Rikse R Marak, MCS was recently appointed as the Council’s new Secretary by Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, District Council Affairs Department, T Dkhar following Sangma’s promotion to the post of Principal Secretary to the Executive Committee.According to a notification, Marak will be functioning in her new posting with immediate effect. Meanwhile, besides functioning as the Principal Secretary to the EC, outgoing secretary Sangma will continue to hold the post of District Council Court Judge until further order.

Draft electoral roll
Shillong: A programme for final publication of electoral rolls will be held on January 17 at 1 pm in the Conference Room (Room No 203) at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Shillong. Meanwhile the DC, East Khasi Hills district informed that the electoral rolls in draft of Sohryngkham, Mawkynrew, Nongkrem, Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh, Nongskhen, Mawsynram, Mylliem, Laban-Mawprem, Nongthymmai, Laitumkhrah-Malki, Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah, Jaiaw, Mawlai, Mawphlang-Diengiei and Nongspung-Sohiong District Council Constituencies is available at the website www.eastkhasihills.gov.in. Any person having claim for the inclusion of a name or any objections to the inclusion of name being struck off should be lodged at the DC’s office and at the office of all Electoral Registration Officers/Assistant Electoral Registration Officers during office hours on any working day. The final electoral roll will be published on January 30.

Third phase of EMRI protest
SHILLONG: Irked at the apathy of the GVK management, the Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union 108 (MEMRIWU) informed it has reached its third phase of agitation starting from midnight of January 15. In a statement issued here, the union said it will stop sending reports to the management as a mark of protest. It reiterated it will not affect its services to the public. The union said the management did not pay heed to the grievances of the union such as increased salaries, leave, overtime etc in conformity to labour laws, increase staff and upgradation of vehicles.

Complaint against WGH protesters
Shillong: District Magistrate, West Garo Hills lodged a complaint that certain organisations under the banner of NESO have called for 11-hour bandh from 5 am of January 8 even though it is known that bandhs has been banned by the High Court of Meghalaya. Further, there were reports of stray incidents of tyre burnings at Dakopgre (WGH) and blocking of road with boulders at Dobasipara area, NH-51 (WGH), which is a violation of the Court’s order.

Fake talent promoter dupes youths
TURA: Organisers of the ‘Garo Hills Super Challenge’, a singing and dancing competition have been accused of duping participants by cancelling the finals of the competition and absconding in their native village of Derek in Goalpara, Assam after collecting fees from participants.
According to allegations made by Alora Momin of Baghmara in South Garo Hills, auditions for the talent show were taken in the month of September to November for which the participants were made to pay an amount of Rs 200 as entry fee. However, after all necessary payments were collected from participants the organizer delayed organizing the grand finale with no information to the participants till date.The complainant alleged that the organizer cheated participants from all over Garo Hills by announcing separate dates at separate programmes held at Ampati, Baghmara and Rongjeng for the grand finale to be held in Tura. The complainant urged the Deputy Commissioners and concerned authorities to look into the matter and take legal action against the alleged ‘fake programme organizer’.

Kidnapping condemned
SHILLONG: The United A’chik Youth Federation has condemned the kidnapping of a Class VII student of Mawpullum Upper Primary School. In a statement, the federation said three miscreants kidnapped Ambrius N Marak on December 21. “We strongly condemn kidnapping of innocent students and humbly request to send him back in a good condition to his family,” said group president Sanggra Marak.
