SHILLONG: Congress and Mawlai MLA, PT Sawkmie asserted that Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has not taken up the issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) seriously.
In a statement issued here, he said the MDA should have followed in the footsteps of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) which has severed ties with the BJP. The MDA has two BJP MLAs in the government.
He said, “I thought the meeting with the Union Home Minister in New Delhi, the MDA would lead to hand over of the letter of withdrawal of support to the BJP-led government in the centre.”
According to him, the MDA should also quit the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) floated by the BJP because of the present situation prevailing in the state and the Northeast as a whole in view of raging protest against the CAB.
With the Center eager to go ahead with the implementation of the CAB despite voices of dissent from the North East, Sawkmie recalled that the MDA last year had passed the resolution in the cabinet to oppose CAB and even the letter in this regard had been handed over to the chairman of Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
