Draft electoral roll published in South West Khasi Hills
MAWKYRWAT: The office of the Deputy Commissioner of Election, South West Khasi Hills, has informed that the list of amendments to the draft electoral roll for both Ranikor and Mawkyrwat constituencies has been prepared with reference to January 1, 2019, as the qualifying date and in accordance with the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. Electoral registration officers of Ranikor and Mawkyrwat said in a communiqué a copy of the draft electoral roll along with the list of amendments have been published and will be available for inspection in their offices during office hours.
Faculty development programme kicks off in Tura
SHILLONG: A two-week faculty development programme (FDP), jointly organised by the Entrepreneurship Cell, Placement and Counselling Cell and Department of Management in collaboration with Tura Christian College kicked off at Tura Christian College on Monday. Abhigyan Bhattacharjee, Associate Professor, Department of Management and coordinator of the programme said that participants for the FDP are faculties from disciplines of science, engineering, commerce, management and economics from different institutions in Garo Hills. The inaugural programme was attended by chief guest Eugene D. Thomas, Department of Economics, NEHU and former Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Tura Campus. BB Sangma, Retd. CGM, Reserve Bank of India and formerly Director, IIBM, Guwahati was also present as the guest of honour. Other dignitaries who were present in the inaugural function were LR Sangma, former Commissioner and Secretary, Education and governing body member of TCC, GG Momin, former Controller of Examinations and Joint Director, MBOSE, and Ina Nungshi Imsong, Principal, Harding Theological College, Tura. Sanggra A Sangma of Tura Christian College delivered the vote of thanks and expressed his pleasure in hosting the programme at Tura Christian College and wished the programme all success. The programme will formally conclude on February 2.
Training programme on sign language held in Ri Bhoi
Nongpoh: A one-day training programme on sign language cum mock poll was held at the science hall in Nongpoh on Monday. The programme was organised by the Meghalaya Deaf Association (MDA) in collaboration with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya. Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner (EL) RM Kurbah attended the programme as the chief guest and informed the gathering that the main purpose of the programme was to impart training to Booth Level Officers on sign language. She urged the trainees to be patient in dealing with hearing and speech impaired individuals and to be echibit kindness towards them. MDA president Ferdinand Lyngdoh acted as the resource person during the programme while Kumari Veronica Nonglait, Special Educator, Bethany Society, Shillong assisted with the translation. Training was presided over by Ri Bhoi ADC DP Kharsati.
Entrepreneurship workshop to be held in NEHU
SHILLONG: The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council in collaboration with the Indian STEPs and Business Incubators Association (ISBA) , will be conducting a workshop on opportunties for entrepreneurs and researchers in NEHU on January 22. The workshop is titled “BIRAC Creating Biotech Startup Ecosystem: Opportunities for Academic Institutions, Entrepreneurs, Startups and Innovators”. Registration will be free of cost and more than 75 delegates from the region are expected to attend the event. The sessions will be facilitated by experienced resource persons including officials from BIRAC, beneficiaries of BIRAC initiatives and executives from ISBA. The discussions will help the audience get a deep insight into the various schemes and benefits available to entrepreneurs and innovators in biotech sector mainly in North East India. The implementation partner for the event is North Eastern Hill University.
Group plans training for visually challenged individuals
SHILLONG: The Organization for Inclusive Development (OFID) held a press conference in the city on Monday in which Meghalaya unit president Benistar Kharpor said OFID’s objective is to change the mindset of the society towards the visually impaired. OFID was founded by Thomas Tajo from Arunachal Pradesh and aims to provide training to the visually impaired on echo location and navigational approach. OFID was established in Shillong in October 2018 and has eight members. National president Tajo, who stated that he is ‘happily blind’, pointed out that blind people can be taught navigational skills and do not necessarily have to depend on other people. Tajo also requested the government to provide funds to such approaches which have been validated by science as well.
31 arrested in West Garo Hills last year for selling illicit liquor
TURA: A total of 31 persons have been arrested under section 53(1) of the ME Act in raids conducted by the Excise Department in the entire district of West Garo Hills during the months of November and December last year. According to a release, a total of 36 cases were detected including 5 unclaimed cases with seizure amounting to approximately 55.02 litres of IMFL, 52.30 litres of Beer and 45.5 litres of ID liquor. In this regard, 15 cases were disposed off and a fine amounting to Rs 18, 500/- was realized.
Women’s rights conference held
SHILLONG: The first North-East Conference, organised by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), Shillong, was held at ‘Fair Haven’ Bivar Road in the city on January 17 and 18. The conference centered on the theme ‘Women Against Violence’ and was attended by delegates from various associations in the North East region. Other dignitaries include Vinodhini Moses, National General Secretary, YWCA of India along with Kalpana David, Assistant General Secretary, YWCA of India.
