PDF forms new body in Ri Bhoi
NONGPOH: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) on Wednesday constituted its new body in Ri Bhoi to strengthen the organisation before the district council election. The confirmation for the committee’s office bearers was taken by PDF state president Ivanlumlang Marbaniang in the presence of Auspicious Lyngdoh Mawphlang, the party’s state secretary, and other party members. Party candidates who are contesting from the five constituencies of the district also attended. Addressing the gathering, Marbaniang and Umsning legislator Jason Sawkmie Mawlong told party workers that the party has to live up to its motto of ‘Unite, Protect and Grow’. The office bearers of the parent body include advisor Lambok Mylliemngap and Albinus Lyngdoh, Dipshon Ryntathiang (president), PB Syngkli (working president), Gilbert Lamare (general secretary) and Umsning legislator Jason Sawkmie Mawlong as the treasurer.

Fire in Lapang’s building
SHILLONG: A fire broke out in the basement of a building belonging to the Chief Advisor to the Government , DD Lapang here on Wednesday afternoon at Lower Lachumiere. No loss of property was reported.

New parish church to be opened
Shillong: The new Parish Church of St. Mary’s Parish, Mawpat, Shillong will be blessed and inaugurated by Archbishop, Rev Dominic Jala on January 27. The services will commence at 09:30 am. On the same day, the annual eucharistic procession will start at 1pm. The Parish informs that vehicles of priests, religious and invitees coming from Areas of Nongmengsong, Umpling and Mawdiangdiang will enter Mawpat from Itshyrwat whereas other vehicles will enter Mawpat through Mawtneng which is located a little distance away from Itshyrwat on the left side of the road going down to NEIGRIHMS. All vehicles coming from Langkyrding, Shyiap and Golflinks, on reaching Mot (Mawpat Taxi Stand), will climb up through the road on the left and proceed through the old church of the Parish. Vehicles of priests, religious and invitees will be parked at Madan Shnong (Community Hall) near St. Peter’s Secondary School, Mawpat.

Inter-locality competition held
TURA: In the run up for National Voters Day celebration on January 25 invitational inter locality games competition was held at New Tura Playground, Tura on Wednesday. It was organised by Deputy Commissioner (Election), West Garo Hills Tura in collaboration with Sunny Hills Sports Committee and New Tura Sunny Hills Youth Club. In his brief address, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Ram Singh informed about the objectives of National Voters Day and urged everyone eligible to enroll themselves and get their EPIC card. He also thanked the locality people and organizers for the success of the programme. In the day long programme, Tug of War, plate race, sack race, marble race, obstacle race and 100 metres race for both boys and girls were organised in which various localities of the town participated.

NEHU signs MoU with Bangkok university
Shillong: The vice- chancellor of NEHU, Professor S.K. Srivastava and Professor Bundhit Eua-arporm, the President of the Chulalongkorn University (CU), Bangkok recently signed an MoU to ensure and guide concrete cooperation between the two Universities in compliance with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s initiatives to promote academic cooperation between Thai & Indian Educational Institutes. The MoU was the outcome of the earlier visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong and followed by the visit of the members of the delegation from Chulalongkorn University. It was signed in the presence of Chutintorn Gongsakdi, the Ambassador of Thailand to India and his counterpart Her Suchitra Durai, the Ambassaador of India to Thailand, Associate Professor Apisak Dhiravisit, Deputy Director of the Thailand Research Fund, members of the delegation from NEHU and a host of dignitaries.

Financial aid for poor, others in South Shillong
SHILLONG: The monitoring cum implementation committee of South Shillong constituency has informed that it has extended financial help of Rs 8,00,200 under discretionary grants to various BPL families, BPL students, medical treatment for fire victims, cancer patients, mentally challenged patients, landslide victims (natural calamity), church committees, puja committees, school and college committees, sports, Social, Cultural Clubs, Dorbar Shnongs, NGO’s, self-employment for widows etc to 78 beneficiaries for a grand total amount. The statement added that financial help and support for day to day needs, and unforeseen incidents for emergent financial help and support to the people of the constituency was planned, initiated and recommended by local MLA Sanbor Shullai.
