SHILLONG: A public interest litigation was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday on the inter-state border dispute.
In a statement, Advocate FL Nonglait said social activist THS Bonney filed the PIL based on official documents provided by legislator Adelbert Nongrum. The respondents are the Union Government and the governments of Assam and Meghalaya.
The case will be listed next week for hearing.
Around 12 sensitive areas of disputes were highlighted for immediate relief contravening public peace and security. Advocates Nonglait and Ranbir Yadav took up the matter before the Chief Justice of India.
The decades-old border dispute remains a contentious issue between Assam and Meghalaya with successive governments failing to resolve it. The 12 areas of difference between the two states are Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Langpih, Borduar, Boklapara, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Khanapara-Pillangkata, Desh Doomreah, Block I and II, Khaduli-Psiar and Ratacherra, and cover an area of 2,729.14 square km.
