SHILLONG: An RTI filed by the youth wing of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) revealed that a number of academic seats have been wasted.
In a statement issued here, KHNAM youth wing president Thomas Passah said for engineering the state’s quota is 800 seats but 587 got admissions whereas only 15 completed the course and the number of seats wasted is 572.
For veterinary, the state was allotted 96 seats but 95 got admission while only 37 completed the course leading to wastage of 58 seats.
For agriculture, 209 students got admission while 82 completed the course and 127 seats were wasted. The allotment of seats for medical is 573.
“This is a huge loss for the students and the state. The reason is because students who are getting low percentage are being preferred to the ones who have high percentage,” Passah said, adding that political interference also plays a role.
In this connection, the KHNAM youth wing has demanded from the state government to come out with a cutout percentage for students and not to blindly follow 40:40 reservations.
