SHILLONG: Two MLAs, Hamlet Dohling , a Cabinet Minister in Meghalaya and Lambor Malniang who is the chairman of the State Planning Board, attended the rally-cum-public meeting organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment), Bill, 2016.
Dohling who is also the former general secretary of KSU, argued that the center is misleading the states and said, “The open invitation to all illegal immigrants, we should not allow. The Bill is only for the benefit of one party.”
If the Center is adamant to go ahead with the Bill, he said the state government had prepared laws to protect the minority communities.
On the MDA’s meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Dohling said, “He has made it categorically clear, North East will burn if this Bill is in enacted.”
Speaking about the issue of entry/exit point which is still pending, he assured that the target to set up the entry and exit points is within the month of April in Ri-Bhoi district.
He said the legislators of the state desired to see the setting up of entry and exit points.
Meanwhile, Lambor said a sub-committee had been formed after a meeting of all regional parties on Tuesday to visit other states that have representatives in Rajya Sabha to seek support for the North East’s demand to get the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, scrapped.
On MDA’s meeting with Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, he went on to claim, “No need for Namaste, but we just said ‘stop’.”
Comparing the CAB to a local cab, he said, “The CAB is a cab that will ferry illegal immigrants in the state.”
