GUWAHAT: A guard in Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary died in the hospital here on Thursday night after he had sustained serious injury during an attack by a rhino earlier in the day.

The Ranger of Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Mukul Tamuli informed that the guard, Naranyan Konwar (32), had been attacked by a stray rhino at Burha Mayong hill on Thursday afternoon while a team of forest guards were trying to drive the stray rhino back to the wildlife sanctuary.

The injured guard was rushed to Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he died of serious injuries at around 8-30 pm.

Teams of forest guards had been trying to drive back the rhino which had strayed out of the sanctuary on January 29 and went deep into a Brahmaputra River isle.

As there were inputs about a team of poacher trailing the stray rhinos, two teams forest guards were engaged to chase the rhino back inside the sanctuary.

However, while being chased the rhino went up Burha Mayong hills nearby where he attacked the guard who came face-to-face with it and fell down on the ground.
