SHILLONG: The state BJP has petitioned the Centre to exempt Meghalaya and the rest of the North East from the purview of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).
In a letter addressed to the BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav on Sunday, the state general secretary of BJP Bashailang Khongwir said as far as the party in Meghalaya is concerned, it is disheartening to see the latest reaction of the people over the bill.
“The bill may have been passed by our party based on the ground reality about the minority communities in other countries and our country is making efforts to rehabilitate them due to humanitarian concern. However, quite in contrary, the people of the North East have expressed their fears over passing the bill,” the BJP leader said.
According to the state BJP leader, as far as the current state of affairs is concerned, it is a sentimental issue in Meghalaya and the misconception that people have developed over the bill has reached a point where no ground of justification can bring reconciliation.
“As a member of the party for which I serve with passion in the hope that the party will preserve and embrace the diversity of the nation, it pains me to inform you that the bill for a country like India amidst the multiple communities, caste and creed is simply validating the phrase that ‘What is food for someone is poison to others’,” Khongwir said.
