SHILLONG: Even as the Center seems determined to proceed with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the Chief Minister of the state, Conrad Sangma has expressed hope that the Center will make the right decision.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme here, he pinned hopes on the assurance he had received from different political parties on standing united against the CAB.
“Whether it is the ruling allies of the BJP or the Third Front or it is the opposition as a whole, we are seeing that almost all the political parties are against the CAB which goes against the national interest,” he said.
Sangma said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appointment is still awaited as the PM is touring across the country and said the delegation met as many as 7-8 political parties and most of the parties were solidly standing against the CAB.
When asked about the comments of Modi who is bent on implementing the Bill while the delegation received an assurance from the Home Minister on considering the sentiments of the North East People, he said, “Every individual will have their mind but at the end of the day the government will take a decision that is going to take all the aspects into consideration.”
Meanwhile, North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) chief convener, Anup Chetia visited Conrad Sangma on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, he said Sangma has taken a bold stand against the CAB though was heading an alliance government with the BJP.
“We need people like Conrad Sangma as not only leader of Meghalaya but the whole of North East Region,” he told reporters.
However, he ruled out any visit to Delhi as they are in the peace process. He added the CAB would finish the identity, culture and demographic structure of the NER especially that of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur.
On ILP, Chetia said it should be implemented in Assam and Meghalaya.
