TURA: Seven persons from Rajabala area have been arrested by West Garo Hills police in connection with the leaking of the question papers of the Meghalaya Teachers’ Eligibility Test.

The paper was leaked on the first day of the exam in a centre in Rajabala on February 3rd compelling a Shillong based lawyer to file a police complaint in this regard.

West Garo Hills police chief, MGR Kumar has said that the arrested persons had planned to pass the test by obtaining the papers and distribution of the same to others with a criminal intention.

The mastermind of the entire operation to illegally obtain the question papers and leak it to others continues to abscond with police on the lookout for him.

However, Congress MLA from Rajabala, Dr. Azad Zaman has accused police of arresting innocent candidates.

“After sitting for the exam and confirming the authenticity of the leak, the students even reported the matter to the invigilator. Worryingly despite the paper leak, the authorities continued with the exam,” claimed the Rajabala MLA.

“Why have the police arrested those innocent students and not arrested the original culprit? Why have they not interrogated those who were entrusted to set the question paper and those under whose custody question papers were kept? Why not question those who were entrusted to print the question paper?  My intention is not to interfere but at the same time it is not judicious to harass innocent students,” questioned Zaman.

The MLA added that the government should have ordered a CBI inquiry but was unfortunately still being investigated by the police.

“This is just an attempt by the government to divert the attention of the people in order to save their skin by making those innocent students as scapegoats,” charged Zaman terming their arrests as illegal and unlawful.
