SHILLONG: Cabinet Minister and People’s Democratic Front (PDF) MLA, Hamlet Dohling criticised national parties such as the Congress and BJP for promoting national and not regional interests.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he urged the people to give regional parties an opportunity as national parties would always overlook the interest of indigenous people.

He pointed to the controversial uranium mining issue which has almost created a division in the Khasi community and asserted that the Uranium mining would  for national interest as it would benefit the county as a whole.

He alleged that Congress candidate from Mylliem, Ronnie Lyngdoh, was in the forefront leading the agreement to allow Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL) to mine Uranium in Domiasiat.

Dohling also did not spare BJP, attacking the party for coming up with the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which suits the national interest suppressing the rights of the indigenous people in the region.

Reacting to a query that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has the support of BJP MLAs, he said that the four PDF MLAs were supporting the NPP.

Asked if he would demand the removal of the two MLAs, he refused to make further comments by pointing out he did not want to intervene in other political parties.
