‘Coal transportation still on’
Shillong: The Meghalaya People’s United Front-East Jaintia Hills District (MPUF-EJHD) in a press statement said that till date even after the Supreme Court ban on transporting of coal from January 15 plenty of trucks from Silchar, Assam come everyday to transport coal from East Jaintia Hills. The association question as to who is a part of letting the coal trucks enter the district when they have to pass through many checkpoints and weigh bridges. It asks the government to look into the matter as soon as possible.
Man gets 10-year RI
Shillong: The office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills informed that Tovanath Dahal was awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment for offence committed under section 6 of the POCSO Act 2012. The accused is also sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment for an offence committed under Section 364 IPC with a fine of Rs. 1000 and in default of payment of fine the convict will further undergo sentence of one month of simple imprisonment and six months simple imprisonment for an offence committed under Section 342 IPC. The sentence will run concurrently. Further, the Court of Special Judge (POCSO), East Khasi Hills, also recommended compensation of Rs three lakhs to be paid to the victim by the State Government.
Japanese team visits EGH
WILLIAMNAGAR : A six-member Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) consultancy team have visited the East Garo Hills district from February 4 to 5 for conducting preparatory surveys of draft final project report on the EAP JICA project entitled-”Sustainable Management of Community Forest and Biodiversity Conservation for Livelihood Improvement”. The JICA team had a consultative meeting with the DC, Swapnil Tembe and the heads of other departments. The team visited places like Nongchram, Darugre Range Forest Office, Dawachipit village, High-Tech Forest Nursery, Rapdikgre, Nengmandalgre, Megagre and Tongbolgre villages.
Kisan Mela inaugurated
WILLIAMNAGAR : The Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), East Garo Hills in collaboration with District Agriculture Office organised a one-day Kisan Mela at Rongrenggre Higher Secondary School Playground, Williamnagar, on Wednesday. Williamnagar MLA Marcuise N Marak was the chief guest and the Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe as the guest of honor. Speaking on the occasion, Marcuise highlighted the importance of government subsidies being granted through various government departments and urged the farmers to dedicate themselves to their activities to enable them to increase production and income generation. East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, briefly highlighted the Central governments farmer friendly budget and urged the farmers to bring a new green revolution thereby enabling them to double their income generation. The mela is being organised to create awareness among the farmers on the need to achieve “Doubling the Farmers’ Income by 2022” the target set by the Govt. of India.
