Section 144 imposed in West Khasi Hills for council polls
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills district administration has imposed Section 144 in view of the model code of conduct that came into effect from February 2 for the district council polls. With this, there will be prohibition on carrying cash of more than Rs 50,000, gold and silver without valid documents, arms or any weapon, use of loudspeakers for public meetings and electioneering without permission from authorities concerned.
Classical guitar programme to be held in city tomorrow
SHILLONG: A musical programme titled ‘Ka Janmiet Ha Ki Sur Jong ka Classical Guitar’ (An Evening of Classical Guitar Music) will be held at the Mission Compound community hall in the city on Saturday. The programme is being organised by The School of Classical Guitar, Shillong under the aegis of ‘Music In Homes’ and is supported by the Indian Guitar Federation and Big FM 98.3, Shillong. The concert will also feature well-known guitar virtuosos Matt Bacon (USA) and Padet Netpakdee (Thailand). With an aim to spread and promote the music of classical guitar, The School of Classical Guitar was established in the year 2016. Since then, the school has organised various guitar concerts and guitar workshops apart from training students in theory as well as practical aspects of western classical music.
Police vigil sought on entry points during ABDK Soba
TURA: In light of the recent detection of close to fifty illegal immigrants entering Tura by taking advantage of the 145th A’chik Baptist Dalgipa Krima Soba, Meghalaya police have been asked to maintain strict vigil on two crucial highways that link the region with neighbouring Assam. The Garoland State Movement Committee has petitioned the district administration of north Garo Hills, which borders Assam, to undertake regular checking from two of its police checkpoints on the highways NH-51 and NH-62. The organisation, which is fighting for a separate Garoland state and spearheading the opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill also pointed out that a number of outsiders have entered Tura and were undertaking illegal trading activities by staying in rented houses.
Flying of drones prohibited over DK Soba venue
TURA: The West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued an order prohibiting the random flying of drones without permission in and around the ABDK Soba venue. The order was issued after a number of drones were reportedly seen flying over the venue at Dikki Bandi Stadium in Dakopgre. However, permission for the same would be given upon production of security clearance from the district Superintendent of Police.
One-day workshop on labour system in city today
SHILLONG: A one-day workshop on ‘Elimination of bonded labour and child labour system in Meghalaya’ will be held at the Yojana Bhavan Auditorium in the city on Friday at 10 am. The workshop is being organised by the Labour Department, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission. Deputy Chief Minister P Tynsong and NHRC member PC Ghose will be attending the programme along with other dignitaries.
Leprosy detection camp kicks off in EKH, Ri Bhoi
SHILLONG: The second phase of the leprosy case detection campaign kicked off in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts on February 6 and is scheduled to conclude on February 23. The campaign was launched by the Director of Health Services (MCH & FW) cum Joint Mission Director, NHM, Meghalaya LM Pdah. The campaign is being organised under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP). RR Lanong, NLEP consultant called upon the medical officers and staff of the two districts to make the campaign a success.

BJP members quit party over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill
SHILLONG: Members of BJP North Mandal and Mahila North Mandal along with various units led by H Victor Lyngdoh, working president of the mandal have quit the party citing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as the reason behind their departure from the party. A meeting was held on Wednesday to discuss the matter in which the members decided to resign from the party soon after discussions ended. In the letter to the president of BJP, Shillong, the members stated that they appreciated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s stand regarding the CAB.
Two arrested for raping minor in South West Khasi Hills
Mawkyrwat: Mawkyrwat Police had on Wednesday arrested two persons for allegedly raping a seventeen-year-old girl from South West Khasi Hills. South West Khasi Hills SP HG Lyngdoh on Thursday informed that the accused have been identified as Syntar Snaitang (36) and Biroi Shylla (28) of Mawpait Trongpleng village. Lyngdoh informed that the victim has been sent for medical examination and the case has been registered. He also said that an investigation has been launched regarding the matter.
Road safety week in WKH
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills district transport office has started its celebrations of National Road Safety Week under the theme ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan’ and an awareness programme will be held at Riangdo on Friday. The celebrations started on February 4. The aim is to sensitise people about the importance of traffic rules, use of seat belts, parking and non-parking zones, among other things.
Cancer screening in city
SHILLONG: A cancer screening camp was held at the Military Hospital in the city on February 4 and 5. The camp was organised by Military Hospital Shillong under the aegis of HQ 101 Area. The camp provided screening of cancer related to breast and cervix in ladies and prostate gland in males. Around 200 personnel including 160 women were screened. A short play was also enacted to depict the importance of cancer prevention amongst families.
Unclaimed body
SHILLONG: The Joint Director of Health Services (SS), Civil Hospital, Shillong has informed that an unknown male patient approximately 45 years of age, was admitted in the Male Medical Ward-II, Bed No. 84, Civil Hospital, Shillong on January 25 at 5:28pm. The patient expired on February 6 at 1:50 am. All concerned relatives are hereby requested to collect the body from the Hospital Morgue immediately failing which the cadaver will be sent for disposal by the Shillong Municipal Board.
NCC felicitates state achievers
SHILLONG: A programme was held at the NCC Directorate, North East Region in which Major Gen Raju Chauhan, ADG, NCC Directorate, felicitated Rikynti Marwein and Kmoinlang Wahlang of Meghalaya in the presence of NCC cadets and officers. Rikynti Marwein is a renowned journalist with 14 years of experience in print media and Kmoinlang Wahlang is an avid Marathon runner who successfully completed the Tata Mumbai Marathon at 71 years of age in record time. Chauhan lauded the two achievers for their dedication and contribution to society. He also urged the youth to follow in their footsteps.
Seized cattle to be auctioned off
SHILLONG: The office of the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil), Amlarem Sub-Division has informed that the auction of seized cattle will be carried out at 11am on February 15 at the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) in Amlarem.
Review meeting held in Tura
TURA: The implementation of schemes and programmes in west Garo Hills was reviewed on Thursday at Tura Circuit House by the chairman of the sub-committee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Zenith Sangma along with members of the sub-committee, PAC, Siju-Rongara MLA Rakkan Sangma and Chokpot MLA Lazarus Sangma. Initiating the discussion, Zenith Sangma stated that the objective of the meeting is to discuss how schemes could be implemented properly within the stipulated time frame by adhering to the guidelines of various programmes in order to benefit the maximum number of people in the district. While discussing the status, key performance and financial status of various schemes such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), NRLM, Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY)/ Prime Minister Awaas Yojana (PMAY), IGNOAPS and SRWP, the chairman along with other members directed the concerned departments to utilise the schemes properly for the benefit of the people. Siju-Rongara MLA Rakkan Sangma and Chokpot MLA Lazarus Sangma both insisted on maintaining timely payments especially to job card holders. Secretary to the government of Meghalaya, community and rural development department I R Sangma, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner M T Sangma and Block development officers were among others who attended the meeting.
