Mawkyrwat: Congress leader John F Kharshiing on Tuesday said that the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in the state will collapse if the Congress returns to power in Delhi.
Addressing the general meeting of the Mawkyrwat Block Congress Committee (MBCC) here, Kharshiing said, “We have seen what happened to the BJP in the assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. People have rejected BJP. If we look at the present situation in the country, the people have turned back to the Congress and as a party we are confident of coming back to power in Delhi in the upcoming 2019 general elections”.
“We will see what will happen in the state if the Congress party forms government at the Centre. Once there is a change in Delhi, the government here in Meghalaya also will change. After 50 days from now (after the 2019 general elections) we will witness the drama in Meghalaya and we will see how politics changes in the state,” Kharshiing added. Therefore, Kharshiing called upon the people of Mawkyrwat constituency to be wise while choosing the candidate in the upcoming district council election because once there is a change in Delhi, there will be a change in the state.
“It is better for you to vote for the Congress party because we are sure that as a party soon we will be ruling in Meghalaya,” Kharshiing said.
While speaking about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Kharshiing said that if it is passed in the Raja Sabha, the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills and other smaller tribes or communities in the country will have every right to knock on the door of the United Nations for protection.
Kharshiing also appreciated the chief minister for taking the initiative to call for support from other parties to protest against the CAB, but said he will not be able to do anything without the Congress.
“We are happy to see that our chief minister had met different leaders to protest against the CAB. But it is difficult for regional parties to get support to stand against the bill… it is fortunate that there is a Congress party which has a large number of MPs in Raja Sabha,” Kharshiing said.
Others who spoke in the meeting included Congress MLA from Umroi, George B Lyngdoh, former Congress MLA from Mawphlang, Kennedy Khyriem, and Congress MDC candidate from Mawkyrwat, Carness Sohshang.
On the day, the Congress also received a major boost when more than a hundred leaders and supporters of other political parties joined the party. They include independent candidate in last Assembly election from Mawkyrwat, Dr BC Lyngdoh, and former BJP candidate from Mawkyrwat in the last Assembly election, Poland Sohphoh, among others.
