Powerful  IED diffused at school gate in Imphal

GUWAHATI: A major disaster was averted when a powerful IED was diffused at the gate of a school in Imphal on Thursday morning.

Police said the IED was powerful enough to cause severe destruction of the school. It was planted at the gate of Catholic School run by Catholic Education Society here.

Police said the device was spotted by morning walkers who called up police prompt. After getting the calls, top officers from Imphal West Police rushed to the spot (gate of the school) where the suspicious box was kept.

After thorough inspection, the suspicious hard paper box which contained stainless steel tiffin was identified an IED. The officers then informed State Bomb Disposal squad, who arrived at the site and indentified the IED a powerful one cautioned all to move far away,.

The police cordoned off the area even as  the bomb squad detonated the IED at the gate safe as it was not possible to move the IED to another place for disposal.

The IED was planted inside a tiffin box along with a hand grenade and pieces of iron as splinters. The team told that it would have been a disaster if the bomb had exploded.

Meanwhile, proscribed revolutionary outfit Kangleipak Communist Party-People’s War Group (Marxist Centre), in a press release, claimed responsibility for planting the bomb at the School. The outfit said it planted the bomb as last warning to Catholic Education Society to surrender for challenging the revolutionary group and for creating schools as a business hub in the state.
